How to Finance a Car with Bad Credit

Bad credit car finance means keeping your down payment in mind, and remembering that interest rates may be higher. Know your budget from the outset, and be sure to leave some wiggle room. Be sure to:

  • Ask questions and don’t assume you won’t be approved. Your first financing option might feel like the only one available. It’s not. Do your homework, and examine other options might be a better fit.
  • Revive your credit score. Work to build up your credit before applying for financing by using a credit card on small things that you immediately pay off. Doing so will raise your score in no time.
  • Know your budget and your credit score (if you have one). Your credit score can take a hit when you apply for financing. So keep all your loan applications within a 14-day period to limit any potential damage.
  • Separate price negotiation from financing. Remember, again: The first offer isn’t the only one. Many dealerships go through multiple lenders.
  • Be prepared for a higher cost. You may receive higher interest rates, or have to pay a larger down payment (or both) if you have no credit.
  • Leasing might be a better option. See what the dealership offers by way of lease. These payments might also be higher than average, but they’re probably cheaper than attempting to purchase.
